Korea's biggest traditional holiday, Chuseok, usually falls in September. Chuseok, also known by its pure Korean name Hangawi, was historically a day dedicated to the celebration of a bountiful harvest by eating plenty of food; however, in modern times, its meaning has evolved. On Chuseok, families get together, with people from various regions of the country gathering in their hometowns to reminisce about the past and share delicious food. In this article, I will outline the steps involved in making songpyeon for the benefit of our international students.

First, slowly and gradually add 100 milligrams of warm water to 1,000 grams of fine rice flour while kneading the dough. Once the dough becomes sticky and soft, wrap it well with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out. Next, it's time to prepare the filling. Crush 20 grams of sesame seeds and mix them with 60 grams of sugar. Add 2 tablespoons of honey and mix well. Take the dough and flatten it into a thin disc, like a dumpling wrapper, then create a small indentation in the center and fill it with the prepared filling. Then fold the edges over to seal the filling inside.

Prepare to steam the dumplings by lining the bottom of the pan with a cloth and then place the songpyeon inside. Steam them for 15 minutes until they are well cooked. Once cooked, pour cold water over the songpyeon to cool them down and carefully drain the water. To prevent the songpyeon from sticking to each other, coat them with a thin layer of sesame oil, making them smooth. Finally, arrange the beautifully made songpyeon on a plate and enjoy.

(Optional: You can add sweet potato powder, mugwort powder, or other types of powder to color the dough. Mixing the powder into the dough and steaming it will result in vibrant colors.)

Now that you know the recipe, why don't you enjoy some delicious homemade songpyeon this upcoming Chuseok? We look forward to seeing the creative and cute shapes of songpyeon made by our readers.
