  • The world is becoming more globalized, blurring the boundaries between countries and transforming the world into a global village. In response, universities worldwide are attracting students from a myriad of different countries and expanding the horizons of education. Our university, Pai Chai University, also sees many international students enrolling each year, bringing with them diverse cultures and new perspectives that enrich our academic and cultural environment; however, studying and living in a foreign country can be a significant burden for these students. To help international students quickly adapt to their new environment and find success with their university life, Pai Chai University offers various support programs. In this article I will highlight some of the various programs our university provides for international students.

An Introduction to Support Programs for International Students:

First, let's look at two major programs run by our university: the Mentoring Program for New and Transfer International Students and the Academic Tutoring Program. Both programs aim to help international students adapt, but there are slight differences between the two. The Mentoring Program assists international students with university life, enhances their understanding of Korean culture, and fosters closer relationships with domestic students while the Academic Tutoring Program focuses on academic support, where Korean students help international students with their studies; however, both programs are limited to certain departments.

Additionally, there are Cross Country and Cross World programs. The Cross Country program involves domestic students traveling with international students on domestic educational trips, while the Cross World program involves international students taking domestic students to their home countries for overseas educational trips. There is also a Global Backpacking program where Korean and international students team up to visit countries directly related to their majors for hands on experience. There are many other programs, so students interested in making friends with international students or international students interested in these programs should visit the International Office website or the International Office located in the 21st Century Building.

Academic and Cultural Exchange Support Programs:The university also provides various support programs for international students. Early adaptation and academic support programs include psychological testing, semesterbased counseling with international student advisors, and the Ministry of Justice early adaptation program. Cultural exchange programs include the Global Backpacking program, home visit program, domestic study trips, and a Jeju Island trip for students with TOPIK level 5. Additionally, there are employment support programs such as alumni lectures, resume review, professional counseling with employment support counselors, and internship opportunities.

Facilities for International Students:Pai Chai University offers a variety of facilities for international students. The Makerspace is equipped with 3D scanners, 3D printers, 3D pens, Oculus Quest, Vive Pro with treadmill, laser cutters, cameras and camcorders, a broadcasting studio and recording room, and a capstone design room. This space supports creative and interdisciplinary activities for students, offering various equipment training courses and hands on programs. The Central Library's electronic information room is a multifunctional cultural space with a cinema cafe, study cafe, internet cafe, and multimedia room.

The Global Lounge, located next to the Office of External Cooperation, is a dedicated space for international students where they can use computers, conduct office work, and receive various consultations. The student fitness center is located on the basement level of the PA dormitory, while the Multiplex Hall for international students is located in the basement level of the Jip Hyeon Hall dormitory, featuring communal cooking and relaxation facilities. There are also dedicated smart classrooms and study lounges for international students, and the Pai Chai University Museum showcases the university's history and various traditional artifacts.

    Dormitory Life Support:

The dormitory houses both domestic and international students, with programs such as the Hyeyum Festival. The Hyeyum Festival is a regular dormitory event that aims to create a space for communication and harmony among students of various nationalities, facilitating cultural exchange. The festival features various booths and performances of songs and dances by dormitory residents. Even students who do not live in the dormitory can participate, so it is recommended to join if possible.

I hope you enjoyed this informative breakdown of the programs offered at Pai Chai University where international students can socialize and engage. These programs offer opportunities to make friends, build camaraderie, learn about and experience different cultures, and broaden your worldview. Participating in diverse exchange programs next semester is recommended for making friends with international students. This will enrich and add meaning to your university life.
