Let us now delve into some fun and interesting facts about The Netherlands.
The Netherlands is a country located in northwestern Europe. It has an area of 41,526 square kilometers and a population of about 16 million. The population density is 476.5 people per square kilometer. The official name of the country is The Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Dutch Antilles (consisting of six islands) is a collective term used to refer to those parts of The Kingdom of the Netherlands located in the Caribbean. Amsterdam is the administrative capital of The Netherlands, but the actual seat of government is The Hague. The official language is Dutch. The Netherlands borders Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, and to the west and north lies the North Sea.
First let's take a closer look at the country's food. The Netherlands does not really have a wide range of traditional foods. Most Dutch people are not really fond of typical Dutch cuisine. Typical Dutch foods include stamppot (bietenstamppot or andijviestamppot), hutspot or boerenkool. The key ingredient in these dishes is potatoes. The dishes are eaten warm, so they are mostly eaten in winter. While Dutch people are not very passionate about their traditional cuisine, they are very proud of their snacks. They love to eat ragout a dish made of meat. Frikandellen and kroketten are favorites too, but they are mostly eaten as a snack along with fries.
Second, let's take a look at what the Dutch like to play. Dutch people play a lot of sports. Almost everyone in the country enjoys a sport of some kind. The most popular are soccer and hockey. Volleyball is also popular. Many people also love to go to the gym to exercise.
Third, let's take a look at what people in The Netherlands like to do in their free time. Dutch people really value their social lives, so when they have free time, they like to spend it with their family and friends. They enjoy eating meals and doing various activities together. These activities include things like playing sports, going to the theater, or taking short trips.
Fourth, let's take a closer look at some you should know before you visit The Netherlands. People in the Netherlands tend to be very direct. People that have never visited The Netherlands before can sometimes be taken aback by this. People who are unfamiliar with directness can sometimes take offense to it, but the Dutch do not mean to come off as rude or confrontational - it's simply part of their national character. The Dutch tend to swear a lot as well because they are not shy to use whichever words they feel are best suited to the situation. They often use colorful language to accentuate or exaggerate. For example: tering lekker, means really good in Dutch and is a very commonly used expression. Another thing to keep in mind is that the Dutch can sometimes be perceived as being cold towards strangers. As an outsider, it can be quite difficult to make friends and to form relationships with people. The Dutch are also not known for being very spontaneous people - they like to make plans well in advance and they stick to them. They don't like surprises or doing things on the fly as we say in English. A lot of that stems from the Dutch being extremely busy a lot of the time.
Fifth, let's take a closer look at some of the must see places in The Netherlands. Of course, there is no definitive short list of must see places because the list of must see places is bound to vary from one person to another depending on one's own preferences and interests; however, many people would list The Hague (called Den Haag in Dutch), Utrecht, and Maastricht as three must
see cities in the country. Den Haag is where a lot of government ministries and agencies are located as well as where a lot of the embassies are. It has a cute city center with nice shops, and a lot of beautiful parks as well. Utrecht is a beautiful city with many old historical buildings. There are some small canals there too, so it feels a bit like Amsterdam, but Utrecht is less busy and crowded and there are far fewer tourists. Maastricht is one of the oldest places in The Netherlands. It is unknown whether or not the Romans founded the city or if they came when it was only a small village, but the city has a long and storied history. The buildings are very beautiful and there is a lot to see. Furthermore, The Netherlands is also home to a lot of museums. The most well known and largest art collection can be found in the Rijksmuseum. There are paintings to see by artists like Rembrandt such as The Nachtwacht, which is his largest painting. There is also some beautiful nature as well. The province of Zeeland is located along the North Sea coast and it's a wonderful place to take a walk on the beach. Other natural areas include the reserves of De Loonse en Drunense Duinen - located in the south of the country. There are some amusement parks as well. The Efteling is the biggest and best in the Netherlands. It may remind you of a smaller version of Disneyland.
If you should ever travel to The Netherlands, you ought to take a look at some of these places and avail yourself of some of the many wonderful things there are to see and do. The Netherlands is a rich and varied country with lots to offer visitors.
