  • School field trips are a special part of education that provides students with a chance to learn outside the classroom and make lasting memories with friends. These trips are designed to make learning more exciting and to help students experience the world firsthand. However, behind the fun and excitement, there is a growing concern. A recent survey shows that many teachers in Korea now feel "extremely high" anxiety about leading these trips. Because of the risk of accidents and legal problems, the future of these outdoor activities is in serious danger.

    The Reality of Teacher Anxiety

The main reason for this stress is not the work itself, but the heavy burden of responsibility. According to a survey conducted by the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union, which included 789 teachers, the level of fear is alarming.

About 89.6% of teachers said they worry about facing criminal liability if an accident occurs during a trip. More than half of them (54.8%) described their anxiety level as "extremely high." This fear comes from recent court cases where teachers received prison sentences (suspended) after tragic accidents involving students. Teachers increasingly view field trips as “high-risk, high-burden tasks” because they feel they might be punished even if they try their best to keep everyone safe.

    Changes in School Programs

While field trips offer great experiences, these risks are changing how schools operate. According to the survey, roughly 7% of schools have already stopped all off-campus outings. To avoid the possibility of criminal charges, many other schools are also reducing their programs.

Instead of traditional overnight trips, many schools are now choosing shorter, one-day activities that are easier to manage. This shift shows that teachers and schools are prioritizing safety and legal protection over the variety of student experiences. A staff member from the union explained, “Without proper legal protection, it is very difficult for teachers to lead these trips with confidence.” In conclusion, the issue of field trip safety plays an important role in the quality of our education. Field trips are more than just a break from school; they are a place where students explore, rest, and learn together. However, if teachers are filled with fear and anxiety, students will not be able to enjoy the field trips either. For a field trip where both teachers and students can be happy, I believe that legal systems must be created to protect teachers.
