  • South Korea is facing a shortage of naphtha, an important petroleum product. Naphtha is used to make many everyday items, so this problem is affecting both businesses and consumers. Many people do not notice naphtha in daily life, but it is a key material in the petrochemical industry. It is used to produce plastics, synthetic fibers, and many other products that people use every day.

    Global Conflict Causes Supply Problems

The shortage is mainly caused by problems in the global oil supply. The conflict between the United States and Iran has made the situation worse. Iran has limited ship movement through the Strait of Hormuz, which is an important route for oil transportation. Because of this, many countries are having difficulty getting enough oil and related products. South Korea depends heavily on imports from the Middle East. About 70 percent of its crude oil and more than 35 percent of its naphtha come from this region. This makes Korea especially vulnerable to supply disruptions.

    Rising Prices and Production Delays

Because of the shortage, industries in Korea are facing higher costs and delays in production. Companies are struggling to keep up with demand. Naphtha is important for making plastic bags, food containers, packaging, and medical supplies. As a result, the shortage is increasing not only fuel prices but also the cost of everyday goods. Consumers are now paying more for products made from plastic. At the same time, businesses are finding it harder to maintain stable production.

    The Government Takes Action

In response to the situation, the Korean government has taken several steps. It has banned the export of naphtha to keep more supply inside the country. The government has also lowered import tariffs and is providing financial support to help companies deal with rising costs. These actions are meant to reduce the impact of the shortage and support the economy.

    Public Concern Is Growing

Some reports say that people are buying and storing large amounts of plastic goods, such as trash bags. This shows that public concern is growing.

People are worried that prices will continue to rise and that shortages may last longer than expected. So, experts warn that if instability in the Middle East continues, the naphtha shortage could last for several months. This situation shows how global events can directly affect daily life. For now, both the government and businesses are trying to manage the crisis, but the future remains uncertain.
